Why ToughSonic is the workhorse for liquid level and distance measurement in Great Lakes plants

Non-contact — nothing to foul, corrode, or wear

The sensor mounts above the surface and measures through the air, so it never touches the liquid. No fouling, scaling, or corrosion from the product; no moving parts in the tank. ToughSonic sensors are low maintenance with a long service life.

Continuous, distance-proportional output straight to your control system

ToughSonic emits an ultrasonic pulse, times the echo off the surface, and reports the exact distance—not just presence. The output signal changes proportionally with the measured distance for seamless integration with a PLC, HMI, or BinCloud for real-time inventory, batch control, and high/low alerts.

Unaffected by color, light, or transparency—and simple to set up

Because it measures with sound instead of light, ambient lighting, product color, shine, and transparency don’t affect the reading. Free SensorView™ PC software configures, tests, and clones sensors in seconds—save one setup and copy it across a whole network with Group Control.

Rugged, sealed construction for wet, dirty, or corrosive environments

Solid-state electronics and a rugged piezoelectric transducer are fully epoxy-potted inside a Type 316 stainless-steel (TS-100) or chemical-resistant Kynar® PVDF (TS-200) housing. Every sensor is sealed to NEMA-4X, NEMA-6P, and IP68 for indoor, outdoor, and washdown environments.

Models

ToughSonic Ultrasonic Sensors

Two series, based on environment. The TS-100 series is the general-purpose, 316 stainless workhorse; the TS-200 series adds a PVDF (Kynar®)  housing for corrosive and chemical service. Both set up with free SensorView™ software. Send us the application and we’ll spec the range and housing.

Configure your ToughSonic to your application

ToughSonic sensors install above the surface with a clear line of sight to the liquid or target. The right mount and thread adapter depend on your fitting, headroom, and whether the sensor points into a tank, over a channel, or across a conveyor. Not sure which fits?  Tell us about your application, and we'll spec the right accessories for you.

Top-of-tank mounting — the sensor mounts above the liquid surface and aims straight down; the standard choice for tank and vessel level.

Bracket mounting — swivel-style, stainless-steel, block-clamp, and adjustable multi-axis clamps mount to frames, walls, or equipment for distance monitoring and object detection.

Open-air mounting — mounted above channels, sumps, or reservoirs for environmental and flood monitoring.

Thread adapters — TS-100 (30 mm thread) uses standard and elevated 2” NPT-to-30 mm adapters; TS-200 uses 1.5”, 2”, or 2.5” NPT female adapters. 90° adapters and 90° stainless mounts fit tight spaces and wall installs.

ToughSonic sensors offer a robust RS-485 serial interface with high noise immunity over long cable runs — up to 32 addressable sensors on a single data bus, and up to 256 through a Universal Junction Box. Models with both RS-485 and analog (4–20 mA) outputs are available for direct PLC/HMI integration.

DPM-200 / DPM-300 / DPM-500 digital panel meters for local readout (4–20 mA and Modbus).

RS-485 setup kit, universal junction box, termination boards (including a two-relay board), and sensor cable sold by the foot.

FAQ

Use ultrasonic when you’re measuring liquids in tanks, channels, or open environments; when the tank is roughly under 50 feet; when the environment has minimal dust, foam, or vapor; and when you want cost-effective non-contact level or distance measurement. Use non-contact radar when you’re measuring dry-bulk solids in dusty silos, when vessels are tall, or when heavy vapor, foam, or turbulence would challenge an ultrasonic signal. We sell both — send us the application and we’ll give you the honest answer, not the expensive one.

It comes down to chemistry. The TS-100 is the general-purpose model in a Type 316 stainless-steel housing for water, harmless liquids, environmental monitoring, and distance ranging. The TS-200 uses a chemical-resistant Kynar® (PVDF) housing for corrosive and aggressive liquids — acids, bases, solvents, and oxidizers. Tell us the liquid and we’ll confirm compatibility against the Kynar® resistance chart before you order.

ToughSonic sensors measure up to 50 ft (15.2 m), with a shorter deadband on the longer-range models. If your vessel is taller than about 50 feet, or the material is a dry-bulk solid in a dusty silo, ask us about 80 GHz non-contact radar or SmartBob instead — we’ll match the technology to the vessel.

Yes. ToughSonic sensors provide selectable outputs — serial (RS-485/Modbus), voltage, 4–20 mA current, and switch — that drop into virtually any PLC, HMI, or alarm panel. RS-485 supports up to 32 addressable sensors on one bus, and up to 256 through a Universal Junction Box. If you have a specific integration question, we can confirm compatibility before you order.

Yes. ToughSonic sensors integrate with BinCloud inventory software — like any BinMaster continuous-level sensor or any 4–20 mA output. You get alerts and notifications, multi-site views, historical data, reporting, custom user roles, and vendor-managed-inventory ordering from any device. We can spec the sensors and the BinCloud setup together.

Yes. Because a ToughSonic measures distance, not just presence, the same sensor handles flood and channel monitoring, conveyor object detection, roll-diameter and coil measurement, height and position control, and collision-avoidance distance monitoring on heavy equipment. It reads reliably regardless of a target’s color, shine, or transparency.

Setup is quick with free SensorView™ Windows software: adjust ranges, rates, filters, and timeouts; save a configuration; and clone it to a whole group of sensors with Group Control. Reference targets improve temperature compensation with no field calibration required. Some TS-100 models also offer push-button “teachable” setup.

Yes. Wm. Neundorfer & Co performs site visits across Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Western New York. We’ll look at the vessel, the mounting location, the material, and the wiring path, and you’ll have a written recommendation in your inbox within a few days.
